With the works of Self in the City: Highlights from the Collections of the Hudson River Museum and Art Bridges and Derrick Adams: Buoyant providing a backdrop, this energetic group will push the limits of string, ensemble playing, and improvisation. Their performance will incorporate aspects of women’s culture, original compositions, American songbook standards, and world music, alongside the jazz and blues of the Harlem Renaissance, with songs made famous by Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. 2020 Women's Jazz Festival WEEK 5: FEATURING FIREY SISTAS! & GUEST

Join the Schomburg every Monday in March for this annual tradition during Women’s History Month featuring some of the best known and unsung performers in jazz today. Throughout the month, we will explore sounds from Haiti to a celebration of jazz pianist Hazel Scott’s centennial birthday. @SchomburgCenter #WJF2020

PRESENTING FIREY STRING SISTAS! Firey String Sistas! is an energetic ensemble that provides a refreshing alternative to the standard jazz band. The ensemble has been committed to pushing the limits of string, ensemble playing, and improvisation to the next level. Founder and cellist Nioka Workman is joined by violinist Marlene Rice, bassist Endea Owen, vocalist/pianist Mala Waldron, and percussionist Camille Gainer-Jones. Firey String Sistas! presents compelling performances that incorporate aspects of women’s culture, original compositions, American songbook standards, world music, and jazz.
