Hello my friends & Happy September!

I hope you've all had an awesome summer. As we're approaching Fall and so many of you are headed back-to-school, I just wanted to share a few things with you, including a funny story.

First, it was great to see so many of you come out to the shows I shared in the last newsletter. A lot of you were at the Westbury Arts show which was an incredible concert. I'll have video from that soon so stay tuned! We also had a great turnout at our show in Dante Park, NYC - the weather was gorgeous and we had so much fun with the audience. One woman said to me afterward how perfect it was that we played my arrangement of "Light My Fire" while behind us we had the perfect backdrop -- a statue of Dante, the author who wrote "Inferno" Yea, it was pretty hot! 😂

Speaking of Dante Park, a funny thing happened just before we started to play -- so we're all set up beneath the trees and we're happy because we have shade, and everything's perfect. We're just minutes from starting, when a bird "blessed" my keyboard with an 'offering' -- I know!!!! 😳 Fortunately for me, I had just stepped away from the keyboard to speak to a friend (Janice), and when I returned to where I'd been sitting that's when I made the discovery. The good folks at Lincoln Square BID hurried off to get me some wet wipes so I could wipe the mess away in the nick of time. In all the years I've played beneath trees, that's never happened. Anyway, big thanks to Janice showing up when she did, because otherwise I'm afraid that bird might've blessed my head instead! #BirdPoopisnotagoodlook!

Some of you might remember it was one year ago that I almost drowned in my car during the Hurricane Ida flash floods. What a scary night that was. I still get choked up when I think about the overwhelming outpouring of kindness and support I received from so many of you. You guys really came through, helping me replace my car and all the equipment I lost in the flood -- I'll never forget that. (For those who don't know the story, I shared it on FB - you can read it here.)

I shared the story on FB mainly because I wanted everybody to know about the car safety hammer that allowed me to break the window and escape from the car before it completely filled with water (big thanks to my youngest daughter, Keri, for randomly giving me the safety hammer with a "just in case you might need it, Mom, you never know.") Now, with hurricane season upon us again, I urge you to get yourself one of those tools. You may never need it, and I hope you don't, but better safe than sorry ~ Love you guys!

"Deep Resonance," which is an unplugged-style collection of tunes, mostly original, that give the feeling of being in an intimate setting as I perform just for you ... well, that's the mood I was going for anyway :) This project has been coming together for quite some time, but mainly due to my touring schedule I kept having to put it on the "back burner." Tracking which consisted mostly of duos (with added percussion on a couple of tracks by Jonathon Peretz) began in early 2014 at Park West Studio in Brooklyn.

There are wonderful performances throughout by Allen Won on bass flute, Vincent Gardner on trombone, Akua Dixon on cello, Maurizio Rolli on fretless bass as well as the previously mentioned, Jonathon Peretz on percussion. "Deep Resonance" is set for release April 22. It will also be available for pre-order on March 26 on iTunes and Amazon.com.

And now, if you'd like a little taste of what's in store, here's a short CD Trailer to whet your appetite. Enjoy!

One of the things I love most about being an independent free lance musician is that there are always news firsts. It virtually NEVER gets old! I get to step just a little bit more out of my comfort zone and it's wonderful because I'm always challenged to bring my best to every new situation.

Well, I got a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream when I performed my music last month with a 45-piece jazz symphony - the Magna Grecia Orchestra led by maestro, Alfonso Girardo. I owe this magnificent opportunity first of all to drummer, Alessandro Napolitano, whose idea it was for me to join in this collaboration along with his Jonio Jazz Trio (featuring Mirko Maria Matera on piano, Dominique DiPiazza on bass and himself on drums.)

What made the deal even sweeter and more special for me is that the conductor arranged and orchestrated a few of my original compositions to include in our concert. Performances were booked in three cities in Italy (Matera, Bari & Taranto.) I was filled with anticipation at the the thought of this dream-come-true event. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, 2 of the 3 concerts were canceled but happily the weather held up for the 3rd which took place on August 13 in Taranto at the Teatro Villa Peripato.

Alfonso Girardo is a brilliant composer and I have to say he really did a fantastic job with orchestrating my music. We did "Ellie" - "Truth's Calling" and "He's My Father" as well as a number of jazz standards to a sold out audience. And now, I'm happy to share with you this LIVE recording from the concert of "He's My Father" (which I wrote for my father years ago and recently revamped.)

I'm very excited about this project and have high hopes that we'll collaborate on future projects, and maybe even fulfill another lifelong dream of recording an album of my original music with a symphonic orchestra. Yesss!!! I hope you'll enjoy this recording and leave some comments below. Please feel free to share it as well with your friends.

Sometimes life gets so busy and I get caught up in just keeping things going, getting from point A to point B, that I forget to take a moment to just reflect and be grateful for all my blessings. Now is one of those moments. We had a wonderful concert the other night at Trinity Place. I'd never performed in that venue before and it looked like the show our turn-out might be negatively affected by the buckets of rain that were coming down on us. We had renewed hope when the sun came shining through but each time it was followed by yet another deluge! I know lots of folks who don't step foot out of their doors at the threat of rain so I figured I'd better now count on a full house.

But despite the weather we managed to have quite a nice turn-out. The music was in top form, thanks to guitarist - Steve Salerno, bassist - Marcus McLaurine & drummer - Michael T.A. Thompson (What a Band!!!) I made some new friends, gained some new fans, sold CDs & got a surprise visit from one of my cousins who lives in the area. Everything came together so well thanks to the help of all the wonderful folks @ Trinity Church led by Mozelle Goodwin-Butcher, Lewis & Kirk Music (Sheila Baptista) and last, but not least, my 'Dynamic Duo' - Sylvain Durand & Pierre Durand.

Just finalized the lyrics for a song I wrote believe it not -- 7 YEARS ago! Procrastinate much? Well I'll tell you, it wasn't for lack of trying. I just couldn't seem to come up with words that "felt" right. They weren't bad lyrics so much as incompatible with the tone of the music. There's a certain click that happens when the proper music & lyrics come together. It's a feeling I get that tells me I've made a good match. Most of the time when I write, this marriage of melody and lyric comes together much earlier in the songwriting process. But with this song, it was different. In fact, everything was.

First off, I absolutely fell in love with the melody. So much so that I had respected it too much to settle for just "any old" lyric that came to mind. But 7 years?? That does seem a bit excessive, and it's definitely a new record for me But I have the feeling the entire song just wasn't ready to be born yet -- until now.

The melody and chord changes came to me fairly easily, albeit in a different manner than my usual approach to writing (more on that later.) Still every time I tried to put a lyric to it -- it just felt wrong. This will sound strange, but I wonder if the song was waiting for me to grow into it lyrically. As if it knew I had more living to do, more growing before I could accurately express what it wanted to say.

From the very beginning the writing of this song has taken a different path from my norm. For example, the basic idea for it came to me one day when I was fooling around with a guitar (mind you - i don't know the first thing about guitar and I've never written another song before or since on guitar.) Perhaps it was the fact of being so far from my comfort zone and my habitual ways of songwriting (typically at the piano) that forced me to create something new out of necessity, since I couldn't rely on "old tried & true tricks on an instrument I could barely get a decent sound out of.

So, suffice it to say I'm extremely excited about the final result and can't wait to share it on the next release, an EP (more on that soon.) I haven't mentioned the song by title yet and that's because I haven't decide on it yet, although "What I Know" or "Indeed, I Know" are working titles. (Maybe I should call it, "Molasses" considering how long it took to come out!) Seriously though, don't worry, I know the right title will reveal itself in the coming days, in the meantime I can promise you one thing ... it won't take another SEVEN years!!! OK, my friends, stay tuned ...

On March 16 (Sat.) 2013 I'm very happy to be participating again this year in the Annual Lady Got Chops Festival organized by Kim Clarke. I'll be performing with an all-female trio at Sistas Place in Brooklyn on March 16. The idea was proposed that I do a tribute to my father's music and although I've performed one or two of his compositions in concert, I've never done a full-out tribute, so I was very enthusiastic about the project. Performing with me on this special evening will be Mimi Jones (aka Miriam Sullivan) on bass and Sylvia Cuenca on drums. Sistas Place is located at 456 Nostrand Ave, in Brooklyn and the concert will begin at 9PM (ssecond set at 10:30pm) Please visit www.sistersplace.org for full details or call (718) 398-1766 for reservations.

During my recent tour in Italy we included a couple of more well-known Mal Waldron pieces, such as "Soul EYes" and "Fire Waltz" so I'm sure I'll keep these in the set list for Sistas Place. Others I'm considering are: "Seagulls of Kristiansund", "Left Alone" "All Alone" as well as some of the jazz standards he often played. If you have any ideas for tunes you might like us to do, I'd welcome your suggestions here (even if you're not able to attend.) Thanks and best wishes! ~ Mala

2013 is going to be an exciting year -- hey, it's already starting with a BANG!!!

I'll be doing a 4-city tour of Italy including Torino, Alassio, Latina & Genova. I'm happy to announce I'll be working with Italian bassist, Giovanni Sanguineti & drummer, Paolo Franciscone, who also happens to have worked with my father. This will be our first collaboration; we'll be covering some of my favorite Mal Waldron compositions (many of which I've never performed before) as well as other tunes from each of our individual recordings.

So, the tour kicks off in Torino on Jan. 23 and we finish up at Villa Bombrini (Jazz Lighthouse) in Genova on Jan. 26. If you happen to be living in any of these cities, I hope you'll be able to come out and join us. Here is some information on the venues. I'll share more as it becomes available. Best wishes to you for the new year & be sure to check back so I can fill you in on some of the other exciting projects that are currently in development!

The following piece was written a few weeks ago by David Ackert of the LA TIMES. With every role, they stretch themselves, emotionally and physically, risking criticism and judgment. With every passing year, many of them watch as the other people their age achieve the predictable milestones of normal life - the car, the family, the house, the nest egg. Why? Because actors are willing to give their entire lives to a moment - to that line, that laugh, that gesture, or that interpretation that will stir the audience's soul.

Actors are beings who have tasted life's nectar in that crystal moment when they poured out their creative spirit and touched another's heart. And in their own hearts, they know that to dedicate oneself to that moment is worth a thousand lifetimes."

August 7, 2012 -- I just got back from Moscow and what a great time I had! It was my first time there and the plan was for me to bring my music and perform there with local musicians. A little risky, I suppose, but I'm an optimist so I was up for the adventure. I decided to go for it.

I'm happy to report I have no regrets. The band, led by trumpeter, Roman Ivanov, was all I could have wished for. Top-shelf musicianship, professionalism and just really nice guys! Dmitry Yacovlev (piano), Jack Pechnikov (bs) and Adel Sabirjanov (dms.)

I was impressed with the way we were able to communicate via the music despite the language barrier (I don't speak Russian, they spoke very little English.) And the audiences were really with us from the first note. The first night we played at Soyuz Kompositorov and the following night we were at the B2 Club. I spoke to both audiences not really knowing if anyone would understand what I was saying. But I could hear there were some who were totally with me. And as for the others who couldn't understand my words, the VIBE was all we needed. There's just something about when an audience is with you, it's palpable and real, and there's no doubt in my mind we were connecting.

There was a wonderful photographer, Vladimir Korobitsyn, capturing the mood the first night and he did a terrific job. You can see the rest of the pix on the FB Fan Page: www.facebook.com/Mala.Waldron.FanPage I'll eventually upload them here too, when I have some time.

On a side note, most times I perform in other countries, I rarely have time to see any of the local sights. This time, in spite of the brief length of the trip, there was actually a little time for sight-seeing, thanks to Marina - the nicest Russian lady who's job it was to escort me around and act as translator for me. She took me around to see the Kremlin and so many other things, explaining knowledgeably about their history. The weather, by the way, was perfect (like Spring.) It was actually nice to escape the humidity of New York for a couple of days.

SO, all in all I'd say it was a very successful adventure. Would I do it again? As a famous Alaskan might say, "You betcha!"

My creativity is like a child who beckons me to play with her, who is given to pouting and even throwing tantrums when feeling too neglected. My job is to keep her happy, allowing her every opportunity to play and dream into being all the wonderful things her imagination envisions.

MA: Tell me about yourself, where you from, your family

MW: I was born in New York City to parents who were jazz pianists. Many people know of my father's work, but my mother also earned a living as a full time musician. After my parents divorced, my dad eventually ended up living in Munich, Germany. My mom moved us to the new york suburb of Long Island. My parents were always very supportive & encouraging of my performing and songwriting.

MA: And your father was Mal Waldon so you must have been exposed to music like (click here for entire interview.)

Barry Towler of the UK had some really wonderful things to say about "Always There." He begins by saying:

"If you want a classy album of soulful jazz then look no further than Mala is the daughter of pianist / composer, Mal Waldron. so we should not be surprised that talent runs in the family!"
