Women's Jazz Festival 2021: "Liner Notes For The Revolution" with Daphne Brooks, and the Firey String Sistas!
In Liner Notes for the Revolution: The Intellectual Life of Black Feminist Sound, Daphne Brooks explores more than a century of music archives to examine the critics, collectors, and listeners who have determined perceptions of Black women in the recording studio and on stage.
Do we ever think of black women musicians as intellectuals? Do we ever think of them as innovating and curating repertoires that actively engage with the complexities of African American history and American history more broadly? Is there such a thing as black feminist music writing? Join us for a conversation with Dr. Brooks as she explores those answers with moderator, Brent Hayes Edwards, Director of the Scholars-in-Residence Program at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The program will open with a special performance by Firey String Sistas!, an ensemble committed to pushing the limits of string, ensemble playing, and improvisation to the next level. Free Event (click link to register) This program will be streamed on Zoom and simulcast to Youtube. You must register with your email address in order to receive the link to participate.
With the works of Landscape Art & Virtual Travel providing a backdrop, Firey String Sistas! will present a virtual concert featuring works from their new album, H.O.T., incorporating aspects of global culture, world beats from Africa, Jamaica, and Latin America, jazz from the Great American Songbook, and, finally, tributes to great women in our current political arena.
*Following the concert, there will be a Q&A with members of the group.
