JAN 2013 Italy Tour Recap

Jan 23, 2013 -- So I traveled to Italy for a 4-city tour which started in Torino, then on to AlassioLatina and finishing up in Genova.  The whole experience was very exciting, and considering we did it all within the span of less than one week, you might not be surprised ...

Going Back to Italy for Trio Tour

2013 is going to be an exciting year -- hey, it's already starting with a BANG!!!  I'll be doing a 4-city tour of Italy including Torino, Alassio, Latina & Genova.  I'm happy to announce I'll be working with Italian bassist, Giovanni Sanguineti & drummer, Paolo Franciscone, who also happens to have worked with my father.  This will be our first collaboration; we'll be covering some of my favorite Mal Waldron compositions (many of which I've never performed before) as well as other tunes from each of our individual recordings.

Inspiration for ALL Artists

The following piece was written a few weeks ago by David Ackert of the LA TIMES.  It ... speaks ... to the Soul of ALL true artists ... " ... Actors are beings who have tasted life's nectar in that crystal moment when they poured out their creative spirit and touched another's heart ... in their own hearts, they know that to dedicate oneself to that moment is worth a thousand lifetimes."

Mala in Moscow!

FIRST Time in Moscow:  ONE weekend, TWO great jazz clubs = Infinite Memories!  ... I was impressed with the way we were able to communicate via the music despite the language barrier (I don't speak Russian, they spoke very little English.)  And the audiences were really with us from the first note.  The first night we played at Soyuz Kompositorov and the following night we were at the B2 Club.

"Girls in the Band" Documentary

Though I haven't gotten around to viewing this myself yet, the much anticipateddocumentary

  • 9
"The Girls in the Band," by director Judy Chaikin, about the history of women in jazz up to the present has finally been released! By all accounts the film is very good, and gives long overdue exposure to some very talented ladies (Oh, by the way, a couple of little birdies told me that yours truly can be seen in the film too -- somewhere near the end.)

  • Which brings me to my last item: this photo (below), which may or may not seem familiar to you.  It's affectionately called "Another Great Day in Harlem" (after the original one which featured mostly male jazz artists of the day.)  This new photo shoot was organized by Ms. Chaikin in connection with the release of her film.  I'm very honored to have been asked to participate in it.  *NOTE* Free CD to the 1st person to point me out.  No fair if you were at the shoot!  [You can click on the pic for a larger version on the "Girls in the Band" website]

Thoughts on Creativity

My creativity is like a child who beckons me to play ...

Long time, No See

You may have noticed that it's been more than a "minute" since you heard from me.  After checking my records, I see that it's actually been two years!  I guess I could bore you with talk about ...
